  • Finland’s Independence Day Reception in Guangzhou

Date: 2011.12.08 | Category: Life Abroad, Me | Tags:

Yesterday I asked at my Facebook Page if there’s interest to saw some photos from the Finland’s Independence Day Reception held by the Consul General of Finland in Guangzhou. Thank you my readers Barbarka, Alex, Twang and Marcus, here are some photos for you!

    Me and my handsome boyfriend

Reception was held at the Shangri-La Hotel

I think I have never seen my boyfriend as handsome as Tuesday night

Unfortunately the Consulate in Guangzhou will close it’s doors next year and this seems to be the last time we have the chance to celebrate our country’s independence this luxuriously.

I always read your blog with interest. I am terrible at learning languages. I loved how you wore red, I am sure your bf loved it! BTW you two make a cute couple. :)

Thanks for posting the photos. This is so nice that Finnish Consulate organized the celebration in Guangzhou! Poland’s Independence Day was on 11th of November but I don’t think that there was anything happening in the Consulate because of this anniversary… Quite sad, I hope that they’ll improve next year. I also want to take my boyfriend for Poland’s Independence Day Reception and tell him something more about Poland – for now he only knows that Poles also eat dumplings ;)

It was very nice of them to arrange the reception, even though I’m sad that it will be the last one.

Can your boyfriend speak any Polish? I’m a terrible teacher for my BF, but he can still say few words FInnish.

He can say just a few words in Polish ;) but I know that it’s one of the most complex languages and the other thing is that it’s extremely difficult to teach someone your native language if you don’t have right preparation. My boyfriend is also a bad mandarin and cantonese teacher to me. But his nephew is great in studing languages – he’s nearly three years old and repeats everything like a parrot :)

You are right! Being a native speaker doesn’t mean that someone is a good teacher :) I can sure speak and write Finnish, but can’t explain any grammar for example. I also think that in a relationship it’s best to stay as a boyfriend and a girlfriend and not to turn into teacher and a student.

Oh, to be a kid and to learn languages that easily!

why are they closing the Consulate? is it because there are not enough Finns in Guangzhou to justify the costs?

They only said that it’s because of the monay, but I don’t know why they decided to close the Consulate in Guangzhou. There aren’t that many Finns in the area, but there are lot of Chinese in the are that are going to China for business and travel.

It was formal, but not as formal as it looks in the photos. Most important thing was to meet fellow Finns and to enjoy great food.
